When I die
I want you to climb the highest mountain you see.
As you set your ice axe upon the peak and plant your flag, think:
he should have done this.
When I die
I want you to call my mom each day
tell her how magical she is.
I want you to
make her smile.
And when you feel her happiness, you shall think:
He should have done this.
When I die
I want you to build a company
write a book
fly a plane, do loop de loops
play outside in the summer
laugh
as loud as you can
for no reason.
I want you to call every woman I’ve ever been with
and thank her for loving me
in that beautiful special way that only women can.
I want you to hold a new love close
feeling
her breath on your neck
eyelashes on your cheek
soft murmurs
and think
he should be doing this.
When I die
I want you to come to my funeral with a pickaxe
rip apart the coffin
pull me out
shake me awake
and point out life
all….
the…
beautiful….
fantastic….
possibilities
and say: “Go! Do this.”
(I wrote this over two years ago, shortly after making a vow that changed my life. Amazing the difference a simple commitment makes over time. Still, a damn nice reminder…)
Awesome 🙂 it is something we should read everyday to remind us that time is waiting fo noone and we should live our dream each and everyday !
Thank you for sharing, Kamal! Wonderful poem.
Wow.
Looks like we have to die many times in our life to experience a new birth and new life.
Challenges in life are beautiful things. And depression is wonderful gift which is forcing us to continuously grow in life.
Life is beautiful 🙂
Yes. Good heavens, yes.
This is beautiful. Your writing is not beautiful despite your fears, it’s beautiful because of it. I’ve missed your writing. Welcome back! 🙂

Wow that brought me a few tears of gratitude for my own life Thank you
I almost couldn’t contain the tears when I read this. We are so blessed to be alive, to be aware of so much perfection and grace. Thank you.
Dear Kamal, Thank you so much for sending me the link to your poem. When I wrote to you on Thursday night, knowing especially that you were traveling, and not wanting to assume anything, I watched Glenns’ interview with you from Thursday, again. I pause the show and wrote and pause the show and wrote to get all of your poem on paper! It’s so beautiful and so profound that I could not contain myself from crying! Beautiful things do that to me! Again, thank you so very much! Sincerely, Kathleen Wickizer
Dear Kathleen, my absolute pleasure!
